Natural Resource Scientist / Engineer Intern

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA



Position Description:
This 32-week program will focus on providing an intensive, well-rounded experience with the Southern Research Station Research and Development to develop the acumen for natural resource science research and support to be a strong SRS research scientist or support scientist candidate. The Resource Assistant would engage with multiple research work groups (RWUs) and locations, experimental forests, and cooperating partner's holdings due to the multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional research projects supported by the position. The expectation is that the Resource Assistant will gain better exposure to mentoring, stronger workforce connections, enhanced tempering, and stronger linkages to the work of the SRS. The RA (biological, natural resource management, physical science, or preferably biological/agricultural engineer) would be deployed in a number of ways that would provide coverage for our research program here in Tallahassee as well as the technician support and data management needs for the Chipola EF as we are ramping up restoration and research activities on the forest. The position requires a self-motivated, detail oriented, and team-oriented individual with an interest in pursuing research pursuits.



Duties:



Assist and supporting research teams in multiple phases of the research process by performing a variety of field, laboratory, and greenhouse experimentation duties including data acquisition, designing, analyzing, installation, monitoring, and troubleshooting field monitoring systems (climate/meteorological, water, soil, vegetation) as a means of getting fully exposed to the research and research support.





Design and conducting field experiments (in a team setting) often in concert with undergraduate and graduate students to better understand and explain impacts of change on water resources, soil health, carbon dynamics, and vegetation (stand conditions) including analyzing and interpreting data using conventional and contemporary means, preparing reports on findings, and supporting and/or initiating writing manuscripts for publication.


Data management (data input, database maintenance, etc.)


Provide support in outreach and recruiting efforts to engage and attract the next generation workforce.




Qualifications:

This position requires a doctoral degree in biological/agricultural/environmental/natural resource engineering, biology, or a related field of science underlying natural resource and/or ecological research. The course of study in at least one degree held should have included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological/natural resource sciences. At least one degree (or alternatively minor) in natural resources, environmental, water resources/hydrology, or biological sciences is preferred. In addition, a background in field instrumentation and/or field experimentation is highly desirable.


Benefits:



$18.75/hr


$1,000/month Housing Stipend


Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals


Direct Hire Authority Eligibility after completing minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions





Option for health insurance coverage during full-term





*This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent contractors are required to pay all self-employment taxes (Social Security & Medicare) as well as income tax.
