The Tallahassee Democrat & Tallahassee.com is seeking an energetic and engaging dining and restaurant writer with a dedication to journalism and readers. This reporter will look at the expansive - and growing - food and beverage scene in the capital city and Florida's Panhandle. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the community, cultivate sources and break news on restaurant openings and closings while also writing entertaining reviews, longform trend pieces and producing profiles of local restaurateurs, chefs and mixologists.

Becoming an expert completely immersed in the restaurant scene will be paramount to regularly producing and updating deeply reported, best-of articles spotlighting everything from burger joints to romantic restaurants to breweries and beyond. Dining guides will also need to be produced ahead of holidays and major events.

You must be able to produce smartly crafted listicles and other alternate story forms as well as traditional content for online and print, occasionally on a tight deadline, with strong headline writing skills informed by our SEO training.
Taking photos and video with your phone will also be required.

The Tallahassee Democrat team works collaboratively and the ideal candidate for this job will be an effective communicator and teammate.
Maintaining a fun, positive and lively social media presence should also be something you will want to do as part of this dream job in the Sunshine State.

The job requires flexible hours, a passion for dining out and experience writing for publications.

Responsibilities:

  • Handle daily assignments that may include breaking news reporting, writing, copy editing, online production assignments, social media, research, database work, investigative work, audio and video editing and visual journalism.
  • Gather information from sources at any location and through any means commonly available for news stories.
  • Interview subjects in person, over the telephone or via computer terminals, and in writing.
  • Travel quickly to wherever the news occurs or is being disseminated.
  • Research written materials, graphic and photographic materials, as well as audio and video recordings.
  • Quickly and accurately report information, either verbally or electronically, for publication.
  • Help in the production of photographs and graphics to support stories.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and pitch story ideas.
    Requirements:
    • Degree-seeking student currently enrolled in a journalism program at a college or university. Students must have completed at least one year of college.
    • Strong command of AP writing, spelling, grammar and style.
    • Reporting skills.
    • Well-organized, detail-oriented and flexible.
    • Open to new ideas, new experiences and learning on the job.
    • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
    • Technical skills (will vary depending on the assignment).
    • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
    • Experience performing a wide variety of tasks under deadline pressure.
    • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills required.
    • Advanced proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

If you are selected for a driving role, these positions require a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.

Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer drug screen and background check.
